Surfshark One Review (2026): Is the Antivirus and Alert Bundle Worth It?

Shikha Kumari Updated Nov 7 13 min read

For this Surfshark One review, the short answer comes first: Surfshark One is Surfshark’s middle plan, and for little or no extra cost it adds antivirus, data-breach alerts and scam protection to the same VPN you’d get on Starter. It’s worth it if you don’t already pay for antivirus or breach monitoring. If the VPN is all you need, Starter suits you best.

So, is Surfshark One worth it at today’s price? During Surfshark’s Black Friday sale, the 2-year One plan costs exactly what Starter does: $67.23 for the first 27 months. The difference shows up at renewal, when One runs about $20 a year more. That makes the extras the deciding factor: antivirus, breach alerts and scam protection in the same app as your VPN.

What is Surfshark One?

Surfshark One is a bundle: the full Surfshark VPN plus three extra security tools, all on one subscription. Those tools are Antivirus, Alert (data-breach monitoring) and scam protection, which Surfshark added in 2026.

People often ask what the difference is between Surfshark and Surfshark One. Here it is in two lines:

  • Starter: The VPN on unlimited devices, with CleanWeb (ad and cookie pop-up blocking) and Alternative ID.
  • One: Everything in Starter, plus Antivirus, Alert and scam protection.

Because every plan shares one VPN, the Surfshark vs NordVPN speed and streaming results apply to One as well.

Using it is simple. You sign in to one account, and the extra tools appear as tabs inside the Surfshark app on each device.

Surfshark Starter vs One vs One+: what’s the difference?

All three plans share the same VPN, so the Surfshark vs ExpressVPN speed and streaming results hold on whichever plan you pick. The difference is the extra tools and the price. Here’s how they line up on Surfshark’s pricing page (US prices, during the Black Friday sale):

How much more does Surfshark One cost?

Right now, nothing on the longer plans. During the sale, One and Starter both cost $2.49 a month on the 2-year plan, so the extra is $0 per month, $0 per year and $0 across all 27 months. Before the sale, Surfshark’s plans (July 30, 2026) listed One at $2.79 against Starter’s $2.49, about $8 more over the full term.

The extra cost arrives later. Month-to-month, One costs $1 more ($12 a year). At renewal, One costs $99 a year against Starter’s $79, so you pay $20 a year more.

Buying the same pieces separately costs more. Full security suites run from about $30 to $200 a year (Security.org’s McAfee review lists $29.99 to $199.99), and Norton 360 Deluxe lists at $124.99 a year in the US. If you only need the VPN, Starter alone ranks among the best cheap VPNs on price.

Should you get Surfshark One+ instead?

Incogni sends removal requests to data brokers and people-search sites on your behalf, then tracks whether they comply. It suits you if spam calls keep coming or your name, address and phone number show up on people-search sites. US buyers also get identity theft coverage of up to $1M (not available in New York State).

One+ costs $40.50 more than One across a 2-year term ($107.73 against $67.23), and $20 a year more at renewal ($119 against $99).

So which Surfshark package is best? Starter is best if you only want the VPN, One is best for one subscription that covers malware and leaks, and One+ is best if your details are already floating around data-broker sites.

Surfshark Antivirus: how good is it?

It’s a solid, lightweight antivirus that scores well in independent lab tests, but it’s simpler than full security suites. Surfshark confirms its engine is built on the Avira Endpoint Protection SDK (the toolkit Avira licenses to other companies), with Surfshark’s own app and update system on top.

What it does, per Surfshark’s Antivirus page:

  • Real-time protection: Checks apps and files as you download, install and open them.
  • Full and quick scans: You can schedule scans down to the minute and exclude folders.
  • Cloud Protect: Sends suspicious files for cloud analysis to catch brand-new (zero-day) threats.
  • Webcam protection: Alerts you when an app or site tries to switch on your camera.
  • Device limit: Covers up to 5 devices on one plan.

AV-TEST, the independent lab in Magdeburg, Germany, scores Windows antivirus out of 6 in three categories. In its June 2026 test of Surfshark Antivirus 6.9 and 6.11, Surfshark scored 6/6 for protection, 4.5/6 for performance and 6/6 for usability, earning the “Certified” badge. A 6 is the highest protection score AV-TEST awards. The performance score is its weakest of the three, and the slowdown section below looks at what that means day to day.

What Surfshark Antivirus doesn’t include

Security.org’s review (updated July 16, 2026) lists the tools you won’t find in Surfshark Antivirus:

  • No firewall of any kind
  • No parental controls
  • No vulnerability scanner for outdated software
  • No backup or cloud storage
  • No password manager

If you need any of those, plan to keep a separate tool for it.

Surfshark Antivirus vs Windows Defender, Norton and McAfee

These are different kinds of product, so the fair comparison is what each one includes.

  • Windows Defender: Free and built into Windows. In AV-TEST’s August 2026 round, Microsoft Defender scored 6/6 protection, 5.5/6 performance and 6/6 usability, earning a “Top product” badge.
  • Norton 360 Deluxe: A full suite for 5 devices with a firewall, password manager, parental control, 50GB cloud backup, dark web monitoring and its own VPN, listed at $124.99 a year on Norton’s US site.
  • McAfee Total Protection: Adds a firewall, password manager, identity monitoring and a VPN to its antivirus, per Security.org’s McAfee review.

Is Surfshark better than Norton? They suit different buyers. Norton is a security suite that includes a VPN. Surfshark One is a VPN that adds a lighter antivirus at little extra cost.

Surfshark Alert: what does breach monitoring do?

Alert watches for your email addresses, passwords, card details and ID numbers in known data breaches, and tells you when they appear. According to Surfshark’s Alert, it checks 24/7 and sends a notification as soon as it finds a leak.

You can add:

  • Email addresses: Including the passwords and usernames leaked alongside them
  • Credit card numbers: Flagged if they turn up online
  • ID numbers: Covering IDs from more than 90 countries, plus US Social Security numbers

Surfshark’s plan table also lists personal data security reports. One Trustpilot reviewer on a higher-tier plan (September 2026) described using Alert to watch their data and Antivirus to guard the device.

Free tools cover part of this. Have I Been Pwned lets you check and subscribe to breach alerts for an email address at no cost, and many password managers flag reused or leaked passwords. Alert goes further by watching card and ID numbers in the same app.

Surfshark Search: is a private search engine useful?

Search is an ad-free search engine that doesn’t build a profile of you, but Surfshark is shutting it down. In August 2026, Surfshark announced that Search was removed from iOS first, with every other platform losing it by the end of 2026, citing low usage.

Surfshark’s announcement doesn’t say where Search’s results came from. If you used it, a free private search engine you already know does the same job, so this is no longer a reason to pick One.

Alternative ID and the other tools you already get in Starter

Alternative ID and CleanWeb come with every plan, so they aren’t a reason to upgrade. Alternative ID gives you a masked email address and generated personal details for sign-ups you don’t trust. CleanWeb blocks ads and cookie pop-ups. Starter also includes Bypasser, which sends chosen apps outside the VPN, and Dynamic MultiHop, which routes traffic through two servers.

Setup and ease of use

Everything runs from the Surfshark app, so on Windows, macOS and Android there’s no separate antivirus to install. Here’s the short version:

  1. Buy the One plan on surfshark, or upgrade from Starter in your account dashboard.
  2. Sign in to the Surfshark app on each device.
  3. Open the Antivirus tab and install the protection service when prompted.
  4. Open the Alert tab and add the emails, cards or IDs you want watched.
  5. Run your first full scan.

Antivirus works on Windows 10 or later, macOS Big Sur or later and 64-bit Android 10 or later, according to Surfshark’s Antivirus. It doesn’t run on iPhone or iPad, or on Windows laptops with ARM chips. Security.org’s reviewers called the app “extremely intuitive”, and on Android they reached the antivirus tab in under 5 seconds.

A quick fix: a user in r/surfshark found that turning off the antivirus’s Web Protection setting fixed sites that kept failing to load.

Does Surfshark One slow down your device?

On paper, a little more than Windows Defender does. AV-TEST’s June 2026 performance score for Surfshark was 4.5 out of 6, while Microsoft Defender scored 5.5 in August 2026, based on how much each slows everyday tasks like opening websites and copying files.

Reviewers report mixed results. Security.org called it “very lightweight” and said a full scan of about 640,000 files took around 40 minutes without slowing its test machine. PCWorld (May 2026) found full scans hit PC performance hard. Scheduling the full scan for a time you’re away from the computer avoids most of the slowdown.

Privacy: what does Surfshark One collect?

The VPN keeps its audited no-logs policy, which is why most reviewers rate Surfshark safe for everyday use. Antivirus and Alert need some data to work: the files they scan, and the emails you ask Alert to watch. Here’s what Surfshark’s privacy policy (updated October 12, 2026) says about each:

  • Alert: Stores the emails, ID or Social Security numbers and card numbers you submit, with ID and card numbers encrypted. Surfshark keeps them while your subscription is active and for 2 years after your last login.
  • Antivirus: Collects device details to enforce the 5-device limit, webcam-protection usage stats, and the name and type of any malware found, along with your country, OS and user ID.

How to cancel or downgrade Surfshark One

You can cancel any time from your account, and you get a full refund if you ask within 30 days of your first purchase. People often can’t cancel because they bought through the App Store, Google Play or Amazon, which handle those subscriptions themselves.

To turn off auto-renewal on a plan bought from Surfshark (Surfshark Help Center):

  1. Log in to your Surfshark account.
  2. Click your email address (top right) and choose Subscription.
  3. Open Payments and click Cancel auto-renewal, then confirm.
  4. For a refund within 30 days, contact support through live chat.

Mark your renewal date. Surfshark’s refund policy says the guarantee doesn’t apply once a subscription has renewed.

Surfshark doesn’t publish a downgrade process. In an older r/surfshark thread, users said moving from One to Starter at renewal keeps the same app with the extra tabs switched off. Contact support before your renewal date to switch plans.

What do reviewers and users say about Surfshark One?

Reviewers call it good value as a bundle, and its antivirus the weakest part compared with full security suites.

  • PCMag: Neil J. Rubenking’s review (3.5/5, November 2024) found a useful set of tools that falls a little short of full security suites.
  • Security.org: The review by privacy and cybersecurity expert Brett Cruz (July 2026) gave it 8.9/10 and recommends it most for people who already use Surfshark’s VPN and want one provider.
  • Tom’s Guide: Mo Harber-Lamond’s Surfshark VPN review (April 2026) said very little extra spend adds Avira-backed antivirus and data leak alerts.

Users say much the same. In r/surfshark’s “Should I get Surfshark Starter or One?” thread, most replies say One pays off for people who will use the antivirus and breach alerts. In r/ask_privacy, people liked running a light malware scanner from the same app as the VPN. On Trustpilot, where Surfshark holds a 4.3 rating from 31,794 reviews, one UK reviewer said they switched from a big antivirus brand to get away from constant upsell pop-ups. A US reviewer in November 2026 called the antivirus “a plus” on top of consistent VPN speeds.

Surfshark One pros and cons

Pros

  • Low extra cost: Same price as Starter on long plans during the sale.
  • Solid engine: Built on Avira’s SDK and certified by AV-TEST.
  • Breach alerts: Watches emails, cards and ID numbers 24/7.
  • One app: VPN, antivirus and alerts share one login and one app.

Cons

  • Missing suite tools: No firewall, parental controls or password manager.
  • No iPhone antivirus: Antivirus runs only on Windows, macOS and Android.
  • Free alternatives exist: Windows Defender and Have I Been Pwned cost nothing.
  • Renewal price rises: The 2-year deal renews at $99 a year.

Is Surfshark One worth it?

Yes, if you don’t already pay for antivirus or breach monitoring and want one simple subscription. If you only need the VPN, Starter is the better fit.

Get Surfshark One if:

  • You run Windows, macOS or Android and pay nothing for antivirus today
  • You want breach alerts for cards and ID numbers, beyond email
  • You’d rather manage one subscription than three

Stick with Starter if:

  • Windows Defender and your password manager’s leak alerts already cover you
  • You mostly use iPhones and iPads, where the antivirus doesn’t run
  • You only want the VPN for streaming, travel or public Wi-Fi

Consider One+ if:

  • Spam calls keep coming or your details show up on people-search sites
  • You’re a US resident (outside New York) and want identity theft coverage

Speed and streaming are the same on every plan, so Surfshark VPN performs identically on One.

Conclusion

Three points settle the Starter vs One question:

  • The VPN is the same on every plan. Upgrading changes nothing about speed, servers or streaming.
  • One adds antivirus and breach alerts for a small extra cost. Most of that cost arrives at renewal.
  • Starter suits you if you only need the VPN. One suits you if you also want malware protection and leak alerts in one app.

If you’d use a Mac or Android antivirus and want card and ID leak alerts in one place, One is the plan to pick.

Frequently asked questions

Q. Is Surfshark One worth it?

Yes, for most people who don’t already pay for antivirus or breach monitoring. During the Black Friday sale it costs the same as Starter on the 2-year plan, and about $20 a year more at renewal. If you only need the VPN, Starter suits you.

Q. What is the difference between Surfshark Starter and Surfshark One?

Starter is the VPN with CleanWeb and Alternative ID. One adds Antivirus for up to 5 devices, Alert breach monitoring and scam protection. Both plans use the same VPN, servers and apps, so speed and streaming are identical.

Q. Does Surfshark have a good antivirus?

Yes, for core protection. Surfshark Antivirus scored 6/6 for protection and usability in AV-TEST’s June 2026 test, though 4.5/6 for performance. It lacks a firewall, parental controls and a password manager, which full suites include.

Q. Is Surfshark Antivirus better than Windows Defender?

Surfshark adds what Defender doesn’t: webcam protection, antivirus for Mac and Android, and one app shared with the VPN. On lab scores, both earned 6/6 for protection in AV-TEST’s 2026 rounds, and Defender scored higher on performance (5.5 vs 4.5).

Q. How many devices does Surfshark One cover?

Surfshark One covers unlimited devices for the VPN and up to 5 devices for Antivirus. The antivirus runs on Windows 10 or later, macOS Big Sur or later and 64-bit Android 10 or later, but not on iPhone.

Q. What does Surfshark One+ add?

One+ adds Incogni, which asks data brokers to delete your personal details, plus identity theft coverage of up to $1M for US residents outside New York. It costs $40.50 more than One over a 2-year term.

Q. Can I upgrade from Surfshark Starter to One later?

Yes. Surfshark says you can upgrade any time from your account dashboard, and the Antivirus and Alert tabs then switch on in the same app. You don’t need a new subscription or a separate download.

Plans, prices and features were checked in November 2026 and change often. Techzeeno did not test Surfshark One hands-on; lab results are from AV-TEST and reviewer findings are credited to the outlets that published them. This page contains affiliate links.
